Change the owner of a connected account

Learn how to change the owner of a connected account when the current owner is unreachable or no longer has access.

Copy page

The owner of a connected account with access to the full or Express Stripe Dashboard can transfer ownership of the account to someone else. If a connected account’s owner is no longer with the organization, or can’t be reached, and the account doesn’t have access to the full Stripe Dashboard, you can change the account owner.

If an account has access to the full Stripe Dashboard, only the current owner can change its ownership. If the current owner of such an account is unreachable, or no longer has access to the Dashboard, contact Stripe Support.

Ownership change verification

You’re responsible for verifying the legitimacy of any ownership change that you perform. Before changing the owner of a connected account, verify the account’s business information, as well as the identities and email addresses of the current and new owners. Contact the connected account to confirm the change, and collect documentation of the new owner’s business affiliation and authorization for them to take over the account.

The new owner’s email address can’t be associated with a Stripe account that was created with Single Sign-On (SSO). If the address they provide is associated with a Stripe SSO account, they must provide a different one.

Accounts without Dashboard access

For accounts with no Stripe-hosted Dashboard access, including Custom accounts, change the account owner using the API or from the account detail page in your platform Dashboard.

Accounts with Express Dashboard access

For accounts with Express Dashboard access, follow this procedure:

  1. Open the connected account details page in your Dashboard.
  2. Click the overflow menu () and select Transfer account owner.
  3. Enter the new account owner’s email address.
  4. Accept the terms and conditions. Your platform is responsible for any risk associated with the transfer.
  5. Click Transfer ownership.
  6. Complete a two-factor authentication (2FA) challenge.

If the new owner’s email address is associated with a Stripe account that has access to the connected account, they immediately become the account owner. Otherwise, they receive an email inviting them to take ownership of the connected account. If their email address isn’t associated with a Stripe account, the email also invites them to create a Stripe account.

If ownership doesn’t change immediately, your Dashboard displays a Pending transfer badge on the connected account’s email address until the new owner accepts the invitation.

Cancel an account ownership transfer

While an ownership transfer is pending, you can cancel it from the connected account detail page in your Dashboard in either of the following ways:

  • Click the overflow menu () and select Cancel ownership transfer.
  • In the account profile section, click the Pending transfer badge next to the owner email address and select Cancel transfer.
