File with TaxJarPublic preview

Learn more about filing with TaxJar.

Stripe Tax integrates with TaxJar to automate filing for US sales tax, helping you file on time and avoid errors that can occur with manual filing.

Availability

This is currently in public preview and available in the following US locations:

  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Kentucky
  • Nevada
  • North Carolina
  • Texas
  • Wisconsin

Before you begin

  • Sign up for Tax Complete: For TaxJar to file on your behalf, you need a Tax Complete subscription plan.
  • Set up Stripe Tax: To enable calculations and collection with Stripe Tax, see Set up Tax. Specifically, make sure that you’ve added your tax registrations. If you haven’t yet registered with the taxing authorities and you sell remotely in the US, Stripe can register with local tax authorities on your behalf.
  • Ensure you have a US-based bank account: TaxJar uses this account to remit your collected tax to the applicable state taxing authorities.
  • Gather relevant state tax information: To sign-up for automated filing, we need information about your business. This varies by state, but usually includes data such as your filing frequency and state tax identification number.

Select the state you’d like TaxJar to begin filing

  1. In the Dashboard, navigate to the Registrations tab.
  2. Select the state where you’d like to set up filing.
  3. Click the overflow menu () on the right-hand side, and then click Set up filing. If you’re not already subscribed to Tax Complete, you can sign-up at this time.
  4. When asked to select a partner, select Use TaxJar.

Install the TaxJar app and create an account

Click Install to connect the TaxJar App. When asked if you already have a TaxJar account, select each Yes or No. If you select No, we automatically create an account for you using the email address associated with your Stripe account. You can change the email address later in your TaxJar settings. If you’ve used TaxJar before, select Yes, and contact the TaxJar support team and ask us to connect or remediate your existing account.

Review your business information

Next, confirm your business details, including your address and bank details. We use your bank account to remit tax collected to the taxing authorities. Always make sure you have sufficient funds in this bank account to cover your sales tax liabilities. If you have a debit blocker enabled on your bank account, you might also need to add the ACH originator IDs to your bank account to ensure the taxing authority payments process successfully.

Add your state details

Provide your state-specific business registration and filing information. These details differ by state, but generally include your state tax ID, nexus start date, and assigned filing frequency. Based on your assigned filing frequency, you have the option to confirm the first return you’d like TaxJar to file for you. You’re responsible for any returns due prior to that date.

Review and submit your application

Review all the information you provided, and click Submit.

The TaxJar team reviews your filing application application and contacts you through email if we need more information. After we process your filing application and you’re successfully signed up for automated filing, you receive an email. You can check the status of your filing application in the TaxJar app on the Enrollments tab. After you have a return due in the current month, you can see the status of your filings on the Filings tab.

If you need help during this process, contact Stripe Support.

Review the accuracy of your filing reports

You receive an email from TaxJar Support each month before TaxJar begins processing your returns. The email includes the US locations where you’re signed up for automated filing, and a reminder to review your filing reports to make sure everything looks as expected.

  • If you don’t agree with the filing report or need to make any changes, you must pause your filings before the 6th of the month at 6 PM ET.
  • If everything is correct, no action is required.

TaxJar automatically begins processing your filings as early as the 7th of the month and sends you an email after this has been completed. You can view a copy of your completed filings in your TaxJar Filing History at any time.
