# Third-party tax apps Calculate tax using third-party applications using the Stripe App Marketplace [Stripe Tax](https://docs.stripe.com/tax.md) offers an end-to-end tax compliance solution that lets you register, calculate, collect, report, and file tax on transactions from around the world. Businesses that want to use an alternative tax provider can integrate with them using a third-party tax app from the [Stripe App Marketplace](https://marketplace.stripe.com/). ## Install and use an app You can install a third-party tax app from the Stripe App Marketplace listing. Alternatively, you can turn on the **Use automatic tax** toggle and select the app you want to use: 1. Go to the [integrations tab](https://dashboard.stripe.com/settings/tax/integrations) in your Tax settings and enable automatic tax. 1. The **Tax calculation** section shows which tax solution you’re currently using. Click **Manage** to see other options. 1. After you click **Manage**, you see which apps are installed and which apps are available to install. If your app is listed in the **Available for use** section, it’s already installed and you can skip this step. Otherwise, click **Install** and follow the installation instructions. 1. After the app is installed, it appears in the **Available for use** section. Click **Select** and follow the instructions for your app to appear in the **Tax calculation** section. After doing this, all new [subscriptions](https://docs.stripe.com/tax/subscriptions.md), [invoices](https://docs.stripe.com/tax/invoicing.md), and [payment links](https://docs.stripe.com/tax/invoicing.md) collect taxes automatically. 1. *(Optional)* To collect tax on existing subscriptions, invoices, or payment links, you need to update each to use automatic tax. You can review and update recurring subscriptions on the [migration page](https://dashboard.stripe.com/tax/migrations). Learn more about [updating existing subscriptions](https://docs.stripe.com/tax/subscriptions/update.md). ## Onboard with a third-party > Stripe calls your third-party tax provider as needed to calculate tax. Your tax provider determines pricing and bills you directly. Stripe won’t charge you for tax while using a third-party tax provider. If you have any questions about billing, contact your provider. If you’ve never used a third-party tax app, there might be additional onboarding, such as creating an account, choosing a subscription, and mapping tax codes to Stripe products. These steps vary depending on the app you use. If you’re having any issues or have any questions related to tax calculation, contact your tax provider of choice as the first line of communication. You can also contact us using the form at [Stripe support](https://support.stripe.com). ## Uninstall an app If you want to uninstall a third-party tax app, you can do so on the Dashboard. 1. Go to the [integrations tab](https://dashboard.stripe.com/settings/tax/integrations) in Tax settings and enable automatic tax. 1. In the **Tax calculation** section, click **Manage**. 1. Click the overflow menu (⋯) next to the app and then click **Uninstall app**. Follow the instructions. 1. The new tax app will appear in the **Available for use** section. Click **Select** and follow the instructions. ## Supported apps | App | [Release phase](https://docs.stripe.com/release-phases.md) | Website | Resources | | ------- | ---------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | | Anrok | GA | [www.anrok.com](https://www.anrok.com) | [Documentation](https://www.anrok.com/integrations) | | Avalara | GA | [www.avalara.com](https://www.avalara.com) | [Documentation](https://knowledge.avalara.com/bundle/ymp1659710033243_ymp1659710033243/page/ouw1691603393069.html) | | Sphere | GA | [www.getsphere.com](https://www.getsphere.com) | [Documentation](https://docs.getsphere.com/) | ## Connect support Third-party tax apps support [Connect](https://docs.stripe.com/connect.md) scenarios across all charge types. When using a third-party tax app with Connect, the account whose details we send to the tax provider depends on which entity is [liable for taxes](https://docs.stripe.com/tax/connect.md). - **Direct charges**: We use the connected account’s tax settings and details by default. Each connected account must install and configure the third-party tax app on their own account. - **Destination charges** and **separate charges and transfers**: You can control which account is liable for tax using the `automatic_tax[liability]` parameter. We use the tax settings and third-party app configuration of the connected account for tax calculation when they’re the liable party. ## Considerations ### Ensure the accuracy of your taxes When you install a third-party tax app, the provider is responsible for making accurate tax calculations. ### Fees and billing Your tax provider determines pricing and bills you for tax calculations. You can contact them with billing questions. If you’re migrating from a legacy third-party tax integration to the one in this guide, confirm with your tax provider what changes to pricing, if any, might apply due to you calculating tax on more supported Stripe products. ### Product tax codes and third-party apps In Stripe Tax, product tax codes determine a product’s tax rate. If you use a third-party tax app to calculate taxes, you need to specify how your products in Stripe map to tax codes with the third-party. You typically do this in the third-party app and the process is specific to the third-party. ### Third-party tax app availability If you’re calculating tax with a third-party, but it’s unavailable for some reason, Stripe won’t apply any tax to the transaction. Subscriptions, invoices, and checkout can still progress forward with zero tax. Subscription cycling will be retried until the tax calculation succeeds. ### Supported products - [Subscriptions](https://docs.stripe.com/subscriptions.md) - [Invoicing](https://docs.stripe.com/invoicing.md) including [credit notes](https://docs.stripe.com/invoicing/integration/programmatic-credit-notes.md), [previews](https://docs.stripe.com/invoicing/preview.md), and [refunds](https://docs.stripe.com/refunds.md) - [Checkout](https://docs.stripe.com/payments/checkout.md) and [payment links](https://docs.stripe.com/payment-links.md) - [Usage-based billing](https://docs.stripe.com/billing/subscriptions/usage-based.md) - [Quotes](https://docs.stripe.com/quotes.md) ### Automatic tax and third-party apps on past subscriptions When you turn on automatic tax and select a third-party app to use, it applies on a go-forward basis. This means any previously created subscriptions, invoices, or payment links might not have automatic tax enabled. If tax isn’t enabled, you can update a given subscription, invoice, or payment link to calculate tax with the third-party app. To see which subscriptions have automatic tax turned off, use your Dashboard [migrations page](https://dashboard.stripe.com/tax/migrations).
