Remote sellers must register to collect and remit tax in Rhode Island when, in the previous calendar year, they meet or exceed one of the following:
- A sales threshold of 100,000 USD
- A volume threshold of 200 transactions
The thresholds include sales of tangible personal property, specified digital products, taxable software, and taxable services. It includes wholesale sales (sales of resale) and marketplace sales. The thresholds exclude sales of nontaxable services.
Remote sellers who don’t satisfy the economic nexus thresholds have the choice to register to collect sales tax in Rhode Island or comply with notice and reporting requirements for non-collecting sellers.
