When to register for tax collection

Sellers that meet both the sales and transaction number thresholds must register for a New York sales tax permit, collect sales tax on sales that ship into New York, and remit that sales tax to the state. The increase from the prior threshold of 300,000 USD for businesses that have no physical presence in New York is effective retroactively to June 21, 2018. The increase for marketplace providers is effective retroactively to June 1, 2019.
Stripe considers that you crossed the threshold if either one of the specified conditions are met (total revenue or number of transactions).
Threshold: 500,000 USD and more than 100 transactions
Period: Last four quarters
Included transactions: Gross receipts from sales of tangible personal property
Effective date: July 21, 2018
Register to collect tax

After you’ve registered to collect tax in New York, go to Registrations to add your registrations to Stripe in the Dashboard. This turns on tax calculation and collection in Stripe for your transactions in New York.

Stripe provides reports of your completed tax transactions. Go to Registrations to access these reports.
Exports
The tax transaction data export provides a comprehensive and aggregated view of transactions by location, including a breakdown of individual tax amounts. Learn more about tax reporting exports.
Location reports
Location reports offer a summary of transaction and refund data for specific US locations and align with New York filing requirements. You have the option to report on an annual, quarterly, or monthly basis with each new year starting in March.
Filing
You are responsible for filing and remitting your taxes to New York. Stripe doesn’t file taxes on your behalf. For automating filing in the US, we recommend using TaxJar’s AutoFile solution.
