# Create a PaymentMethod from an Issuing card

Use an Issuing card to create a card PaymentMethod without handling its card number or CVC.

If you use Stripe Issuing, you can create a card `PaymentMethod` from an Issuing card in the same Stripe account without retrieving the card number or CVC. The API returns a `pm_*` ID that you can use in supported payment flows. Creating the `PaymentMethod` doesn’t change the card’s [spend controls](https://docs.stripe.com/issuing/controls/spending-controls.md).

## Before you begin

- Enable [Issuing](https://docs.stripe.com/issuing.md) on your Stripe account and issue a card (`ic_*`) from that account.
- Get [private preview access](https://docs.stripe.com/release-phases.md) to create PaymentMethods from Issuing cards. [Contact us](https://stripe.com/contact/embedded-finance) to request access.
- Use preview API version `2026-04-22.preview` for the request. See the [private preview release channel](https://docs.stripe.com/sdks/versioning.md#private-preview-release-channel).

## Create the PaymentMethod

On your server, call [Create a PaymentMethod](https://docs.stripe.com/api/payment_methods/create.md). Set `type` to `card` and pass the Issuing card ID in `card[issuing_card]`.

Authenticate the request with a [restricted API key](https://docs.stripe.com/keys/restricted-api-keys.md) that has the PaymentMethod write (`payment_method_write`) permission. Without private preview access, Stripe rejects `card[issuing_card]` as an unknown parameter.

```curl
curl https://api.stripe.com/v1/payment_methods \
  -u "<<YOUR_SECRET_KEY>>:" \
  -H "Stripe-Version: 2026-04-22.preview" \
  -d type=card \
  -d "card[issuing_card]={{ISSUINGCARD_ID}}"
```

Stripe creates the card `PaymentMethod` (`pm_*`) in the same account as the Issuing card.

To give a seller a scoped payment credential from this `PaymentMethod`, [issue a Shared Payment Token (SPT)](https://docs.stripe.com/issuing/agents/programmatic-checkout.md#issue-spt). The guide explains the seller profile, amount, currency, expiration, and supported payment flow requirements.

Creating a `PaymentMethod` doesn’t create an SPT or give a seller access to the card.
