# Enable multi-currency settlement

Offer your connected accounts the ability to receive funds in multiple currencies.
Available in: EU, GB, CH, NO, LI, SG, HK, AU, US
If you’re a direct Stripe Dashboard user, [configure multi-currency settlement](https://docs.stripe.com/payouts/multi-currency-settlement.md) capabilities on your own account.

Enable your connected accounts to receive and pay out funds in up to 18 currencies instead of automatically converting funds to their default currency.

## Enable multi-currency settlement for your connected accounts

1. To enable multi-currency settlement for your connected accounts, turn on **Enable accounts to settle funds and receive payouts in multiple currencies** on the [Connect payouts settings page](https://dashboard.stripe.com/settings/connect/payouts/multicurrency-settlement) in the Dashboard.

   > #### Accounts with full Dashboard access
   >
   > Connected accounts with access to the full Stripe Dashboard have automatic access to multi-currency settlement, and can manage their own settlement currencies independently. Your platform setting doesn’t affect them.

2. After you enable access to multi-currency settlement, a connected account can settle in a non-primary currency by adding a balance or external account in that currency:

   - A connected account with access to the full Stripe Dashboard or Express Dashboard can add a non-primary currency balance by clicking **Add settlement currency** on the [Balances page](https://dashboard.stripe.com/balance/overview).
   - A connected account can add a non-primary currency external account in the following ways:
     - During onboarding
     - In their Dashboard [Payout settings](https://dashboard.stripe.com/settings/payouts)
     - In the [Account Management embedded component](https://docs.stripe.com/connect/supported-embedded-components/account-management.md)

   For connected accounts without access to a Stripe-hosted Dashboard, the platform can add a non-primary settlement currency on their behalf:

   - Add a non-primary currency external account using the API by [creating an ExternalBankAccount object](https://docs.stripe.com/api/external_account_bank_accounts/create.md).
   - Add a non-primary currency external account from the [Connected account details page](https://dashboard.stripe.com/test/connect/accounts/overview).

## Monetize multi-currency settlement for your connected accounts

If your platform uses the [buy-rate model](https://docs.stripe.com/connect/saas.md#buy-rate-model), you can charge connected accounts for multi-currency settlement in either of two ways:

| Approach | Use when |
| --- | --- |
| Pass through costs, with an optional markup (Recommended) (Private preview) | You want to recover Stripe’s multi-currency settlement fees, with an optional markup, separately from payment application fees. |
| Include a charge in payment application fees | You want to include a charge for multi-currency settlement in your payment application fee. You can configure pricing rules in the Dashboard or calculate the fee using the API. |

Use one approach to charge for multi-currency settlement. Combining cost passthrough with an additional application fee for the same cost can double-charge your connected accounts.

If you include costs in payment application fees, each `PaymentIntent` supports one application fee. Setting `application_fee_amount` through the API overrides application-fee pricing configured in the platform pricing tool.

### Pass costs to connected accounts (Private preview)

Use the [platform pricing tool](https://docs.stripe.com/connect/platform-pricing-tools.md) to configure cost passthrough. [Request access](https://docs.stripe.com/connect/cost-passthrough.md#request-access) to the private preview.

- To configure default pricing across all eligible connected accounts, use **Cost Passthrough** in the platform pricing tool.
- To set custom pricing for an individual connected account, use the account details page.

### Include costs in payment application fees using the platform pricing tool

Use the [platform pricing tool](https://docs.stripe.com/connect/platform-pricing-tools.md) to include multi-currency settlement costs in your payment application fees:

1. In the Dashboard, go to **Payments pricing**. In **Additional fees**, add an application-fee rule that applies when a payment uses multi-currency settlement.
2. Set a fixed or percentage-based fee.
3. Apply the rule to your default pricing group or to groups of specific connected accounts.

Stripe automatically applies the fee to eligible payments.

### Include costs in payment application fees using the Payment Intents API

Calculate the total application fee before you create the `PaymentIntent`:

1. Get the connected account’s settlement-currency configuration. Use the configuration your platform stored when it enabled settlement currencies, or retrieve `payments.settlement_currencies` and `payments.default_settlement_currency` with the [Balance Settings API](https://docs.stripe.com/api/balance-settings/retrieve.md) if you have access.
2. Compare the request’s `currency` with the configuration. Include your additional multi-currency settlement fee only when `currency` is enabled in `payments.settlement_currencies` and differs from `payments.default_settlement_currency`.
3. Set `application_fee_amount` to the total application fee when you create the `PaymentIntent`. Specify the amount in the payment currency’s minor unit.

For example, on a 100 EUR payment, a 3% base application fee (3 EUR) plus a 1% multi-currency settlement fee (1 EUR) gives a total application fee of 4 EUR.

The following example creates a direct-charge `PaymentIntent` and assumes that you’ve already checked the currency condition:

```curl
curl https://api.stripe.com/v1/payment_intents \
  -u "<<YOUR_SECRET_KEY>>:" \
  -H "Stripe-Account: {{CONNECTEDACCOUNT_ID}}" \
  -d amount=10000 \
  -d currency=eur \
  -d application_fee_amount=400
```

## Embedded currency management (Private preview)

You can allow connected accounts to receive, settle and convert currencies, including [instant currency conversion](https://docs.stripe.com/treasury/convert-funds.md#instant-currency-conversion-for-connect), through the [Express Dashboard](https://docs.stripe.com/connect/express-dashboard.md#balance) or [Balances embedded component](https://docs.stripe.com/connect/supported-embedded-components/balances.md).

### Get access to embedded currency management

Enter your email to request access to the private preview.

```bash
curl https://docs.stripe.com/preview/register \
  -X POST \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Referer: https://docs.stripe.com/connect/multi-currency-settlement" \
  -d '{"email": "EMAIL", "preview": "connect_currency_management_preview"}'
```

## Disable multi-currency settlement for your connected accounts

If you no longer want to allow your connected accounts to enable multiple settlement currencies, disable **Enable accounts to settle funds and receive payouts in multiple currencies** on the [Connect payouts settings page](https://dashboard.stripe.com/settings/connect/payouts/multicurrency-settlement). Disabling the feature only prevents accounts from enabling new currencies; it doesn’t stop connected accounts from continuing to use currencies that they’ve already enabled.

## Pricing

Stripe charges the applicable multi-currency settlement fee when funds settle in a non-primary currency. In the Dashboard and reporting, it appears as a `multi-currency settlement` fee. See our [full list of pricing and minimum payout amounts](https://docs.stripe.com/payouts/multi-currency-settlement.md#multicurrency-settlement-fees).

For connected accounts where your platform pays Stripe fees, Stripe deducts your connected accounts’ multi-currency settlement fees from your platform balance in the non-primary currency. For example, if your connected account settles funds in GBP, we charge the fee to your platform balance in GBP when possible. If your platform account doesn’t support the currency, Stripe converts the fee to your default currency and deducts it from your primary currency’s balance. See [conversion on Stripe fees](https://docs.stripe.com/payments/currencies/settlement-payouts.md#conversion-stripe-fees) for more details.

If your connected account pays their own fees, Stripe deducts the multi-currency settlement fee from the connected account’s balance instead. See [Fee behaviour on connected accounts](https://docs.stripe.com/connect/direct-charges-fee-payer-behavior.md) for more information.

## Regional availability

While your platform has multi-currency settlement enabled, eligible connected accounts can configure settlement in all [currencies that are supported in their region](https://docs.stripe.com/payouts/multi-currency-settlement.md#multicurrency-settlement-fees).

An account must be in the same region as your platform to use this feature, but it doesn’t need to be in the same country. For example, if your platform is in Australia, the connected account must also be in Australia. If your platform is in the EEA, the connected account can be in any EEA country.

## Instant currency conversion for Connect

After your connected accounts accrue multi-currency balances through multi-currency settlement, you can enable them to convert between balances by using the private preview API. [Request access](https://docs.stripe.com/treasury/convert-funds.md#convert-currencies-instantly).
