Accept a payment

Process payments in your marketplace.

To accept a payment from a customer, you need to create a charge first. As a marketplace, you can choose from two charge types: destination charges and separate charges and transfers. The charge type you create determines how these funds are split among all parties involved, impacts how the charge appears on the customer’s bank or billing statement (with your platform’s information or the connected account’s), and determines which account Stripe debits for refunds and chargebacks. With both charge types, Stripe debits fees from your platform account.

If the following criteria apply, use destination charges:

  • Customers transact with your marketplace for products or services provided by your connected accounts. For example, an online marketplace where buyers purchase goods directly from sellers, but the buyer sees your marketplace’s name on their receipt.
  • Each transaction involves a single connected account and a single customer. For example, a rideshare app where one driver provides one ride at a time, and the rider sees your marketplace’s name on their receipt.

If the following criteria apply, use separate charges and transfers:

  • You need to transfer funds to multiple connected accounts with a single charge. For example, a single cart that contains goods from different manufacturers.
  • You need to hold funds for a period of time before transferring them to the connected account. For example, you want to hold the funds until the goods or services have been delivered.
