# Adds the ability to specify the intended submission method for Disputes

## What’s new

Adds the [intended_submission_method](https://docs.stripe.com/api/disputes/object.md?api-version=2026-10-28.endive#dispute_object-intended_submission_method) property to the [Dispute](https://docs.stripe.com/api/disputes/object.md?api-version=2026-10-28.endive) object and a corresponding parameter to [update a dispute](https://docs.stripe.com/api/disputes/update.md?api-version=2026-10-28.endive). Use `intended_submission_method` to control whether you submit evidence manually or [Smart Disputes](https://docs.stripe.com/disputes/smart-disputes.md) submits a response.

Supported values include:

- `manual`: You submit any evidence manually. Smart Disputes doesn’t respond to the dispute.
- `prefer_manual`: If you provide evidence, you submit it manually. Otherwise, Smart Disputes responds to the dispute.
- `prefer_smart_disputes`: If Smart Disputes detects Stripe evidence, it submits the response. Otherwise, you submit evidence manually.
- `smart_disputes`: If Smart Disputes detects Stripe evidence, it submits the response. You don’t submit evidence manually.

For accounts without access to Smart Disputes, `intended_submission_method` is `null`.

## Impact

Set `intended_submission_method` on a [Dispute](https://docs.stripe.com/api/disputes/object.md?api-version=2026-10-28.endive) to control whether you submit evidence manually or [Smart Disputes](https://docs.stripe.com/disputes/smart-disputes.md) submits a response.
