# Exposes the network response electronic commerce indicator on card charges

## What’s new

Adds the [electronic commerce indicator](https://docs.stripe.com/payments/electronic-commerce-indicator.md) (ECI) from card networks for [Charges](https://docs.stripe.com/api/charges/object.md?api-version=2026-09-30.endive). This response code is included in the [payment_method_details](https://docs.stripe.com/api/charges/object.md?api-version=2026-09-30.endive#charge_object-payment_method_details) as the property [card.electronic_commerce_indicator](https://docs.stripe.com/api/charges/object.md?api-version=2026-09-30.endive#charge_object-payment_method_details-card). We populate this property for supported Visa and Mastercard authorizations. The value is `null` when the network doesn’t return an ECI.

This property is distinct from the existing [3D Secure](https://docs.stripe.com/payments/3d-secure.md) ECI included in `payment_method_details` as [card.three_d_secure.electronic_commerce_indicator](https://docs.stripe.com/api/charges/object.md?api-version=2026-09-30.endive#charge_object-payment_method_details-card-three_d_secure-electronic_commerce_indicator), which represents the ECI associated with the 3D Secure data used in the authorization request. The higher-level card property represents the network’s final ECI and can differ from the request value. An authenticated ECI alone doesn’t determine liability shift.

## Impact

Use this property to see how the card network classified an online payment. You can compare the `electronic_commerce_indicator` value with the existing 3D Secure ECI, when present, to understand whether the network’s final ECI differs from the ECI in the authorization request.

Interpret ECI values in the context of the relevant card network. For interpretation guidance, see the [electronic commerce indicator guide](https://docs.stripe.com/payments/electronic-commerce-indicator.md).

Data for this property is only available for Charges starting from June 10, 2026.
