# Adds archiving and trial end behavior settings to Trial Offers

## What’s new

Adds the following capabilities and updates to [Trial Offers](https://docs.stripe.com/api/product-catalog/trial-offer.md?api-version=2026-09-30.preview):

- Archive a trial offer
- Support for missing payment method behavior at trial end
- Renames `name` to `nickname`
- Makes `end_behavior.transition` optional

You can now archive a trial offer by setting its [active](https://docs.stripe.com/api/product-catalog/trial-offer/object.md?api-version=2026-09-30.preview#product_catalog_trial_offer_object-active) parameter to `false` when you [create](https://docs.stripe.com/api/product-catalog/trial-offer/create.md?api-version=2026-09-30.preview) or [update](https://docs.stripe.com/api/product-catalog/trial-offer/update.md?api-version=2026-09-30.preview) it. Archived offers can’t be attached to new subscription items, but existing subscriptions continue using the trial offer until their trial ends.

At trial end, trial offers now support the [missing payment method](https://docs.stripe.com/api/subscriptions/create.md?api-version=2026-09-30.preview#create_subscription-trial_settings-end_behavior-missing_payment_method) setting when a free or paid trial offer ends. Previously, these options were available only for subscription-level free trials. You can create an invoice, pause the subscription, or cancel it if the customer doesn’t have a payment method. You can also use the [billing_cycle_anchor](https://docs.stripe.com/api/subscriptions/create.md?api-version=2026-09-30.preview#create_subscription-trial_settings-end_behavior-billing_cycle_anchor) setting to start a new billing period when a trial ends or to preserve the subscription’s existing billing cycle and create a prorated post-trial period.

The [name](https://docs.stripe.com/api/product-catalog/trial-offer/object.md?api-version=2026-08-26.preview#product_catalog_trial_offer_object-name) parameter has been renamed to [nickname](https://docs.stripe.com/api/product-catalog/trial-offer/object.md?api-version=2026-09-30.preview#product_catalog_trial_offer_object-nickname). A nickname is an internal label for organizing trial offers and isn’t shown to customers.

The [transition](https://docs.stripe.com/api/product-catalog/trial-offer/object.md?api-version=2026-09-30.preview#product_catalog_trial_offer_object-end_behavior-transition) property on the [end_behavior](https://docs.stripe.com/api/product-catalog/trial-offer/object.md?api-version=2026-09-30.preview#product_catalog_trial_offer_object-end_behavior) hash is now optional. Use [end_behavior.type](https://docs.stripe.com/api/product-catalog/trial-offer/create.md?api-version=2026-09-30.preview#create_product_catalog_trial_offer-end_behavior-type) to determine the trial offer’s end behavior.

## Why is this a breaking change?

The `name` parameter and response property are removed and replaced with `nickname`.

`end_behavior.transition` is no longer returned on all responses. Update your code to use `end_behavior.type` instead.

## Impact

You can now archive trial offers, giving you a way to retire outdated trial offers without interrupting customers who are already using them.

Trial offers now use the same [missing payment method](https://docs.stripe.com/api/subscriptions/create.md?api-version=2026-09-30.preview#create_subscription-trial_settings-end_behavior-missing_payment_method) behavior as [free trials](https://docs.stripe.com/billing/subscriptions/trials/free-trials.md). When a trial offer ends without a payment method, use `create_invoice` to continue with invoice collection, `pause` to stop billing until you resume the subscription, or `cancel` to end the subscription. These settings apply when a trial ends naturally or if you end a trial early by changing or removing the trialing item. By default, a trial offer resets the subscription’s billing cycle anchor when the trial ends. Set `billing_cycle_anchor=unchanged` when you want the subscription to retain its existing billing date and bill the period after the trial as a proration.
