# Surfaces India card mandates on Charges and SetupIntents even when inactive

## What’s new

Changes the following properties for India recurring card payments so that they return the mandate ID even when registration fails and the mandate is `inactive`:

- [payment_method_details.card.mandate](https://docs.stripe.com/api/charges/object.md?api-version=2026-09-30.endive#charge_object-payment_method_details-card-mandate) property on [Charges](https://docs.stripe.com/api/charges/object.md?api-version=2026-09-30.endive)
- [mandate](https://docs.stripe.com/api/setup_intents/object.md?api-version=2026-09-30.endive#setup_intent_object-mandate) property on [SetupIntents](https://docs.stripe.com/api/setup_intents/object.md?api-version=2026-09-30.endive)

Previously, these properties were `null` after a registration failure.

A mandate created for a [PaymentIntent](https://docs.stripe.com/api/payment_intents/object.md?api-version=2026-09-30.endive) can also become `inactive` immediately, without first having a `pending` status.

## Why is this a breaking change?

If your integration treats a non-null `payment_method_details.card.mandate` property on a Charge or `mandate` property on a SetupIntent as confirmation that the mandate is usable, you must update it to check the mandate’s status. Attempting a subsequent off-session payment with an `inactive` mandate causes the payment to fail.

If your integration assumes that a newly created mandate always starts as `pending`, update it to handle an initial status of `inactive`. Don’t rely solely on `mandate.updated` events to determine whether the mandate becomes active.

## Impact

Before using a returned mandate for a subsequent off-session payment, retrieve it and verify that its status is `active`. You can also use an inactive mandate’s ID to identify a failed registration and show the failure to your customer. See [Mandate webhooks](https://docs.stripe.com/india-recurring-payments.md?integration=subscriptions#mandate-status-and-troubleshooting) for integration guidance.
