# Adds the option to automatically pause subscriptions after payment failures

## What’s new

Adds the option to configure Stripe Billing to automatically pause eligible subscriptions in [flexible billing mode](https://docs.stripe.com/billing/subscriptions/billing-mode.md):

- After the first payment attempt fails on a renewal invoice.
- After payment retries are exhausted for an invoice that isn’t associated with a pending update.

While paused, the subscription stops generating invoices, and the invoice that triggered the pause remains collectible. You can also configure automatic resumption when that invoice is paid or manually marked uncollectible, and choose whether to reset the billing cycle anchor.

The [status_details.paused.subscription.type](https://docs.stripe.com/api/subscriptions/object.md?api-version=2026-09-30.endive#subscription_object-status_details-paused-subscription-type) property returns `first_payment_failure` or `final_payment_failure` to identify when the subscription paused.

## Impact

If your integration inspects `status_details.paused.subscription.type`, handle `first_payment_failure` and `final_payment_failure` when you enable automatic pausing.

See [Pause subscriptions](https://docs.stripe.com/billing/subscriptions/pause.md) for eligibility requirements, events, and integration guidance.
