# Rejects duplicate references for pending India card mandates

## What’s new

Rejects duplicate references associated with an India recurring card mandate that’s pending when creating a [Payment Intent](https://docs.stripe.com/api/payment_intents.md?api-version=2026-09-30.endive) or [Setup Intent](https://docs.stripe.com/api/setup_intents.md?api-version=2026-09-30.endive). Previously, validation only rejected references associated with an active mandate.

## Why is this a breaking change?

Requests that reuse a reference associated with a pending mandate now return a `resource_already_exists` error during intent creation or confirmation. Previously, these requests could succeed while the previous mandate was pending.

## Impact

Use a unique reference for each distinct India recurring card mandate. If you reuse a reference from a pending mandate, your request now returns `resource_already_exists`. See the [India recurring payments guide](https://docs.stripe.com/india-recurring-payments.md) for more information.
