# Adds item-level discount support for pending updates

## What’s new

Adds item-level discount support for pending updates when you [update a subscription](https://docs.stripe.com/api/subscriptions/update.md?api-version=2026-07-29.dahlia) and [create](https://docs.stripe.com/api/subscription_items/create.md?api-version=2026-07-29.dahlia) or [update](https://docs.stripe.com/api/subscription_items/update.md?api-version=2026-07-29.dahlia) a subscription item. When you make changes using `payment_behavior=pending_if_incomplete` and the payment fails or requires customer action, we now store the item-level discount configuration on the [pending_update](https://docs.stripe.com/api/subscriptions/object.md?api-version=2026-07-29.dahlia#subscription_object-pending_update) hash.

## Impact

You can now apply item-level discounts to subscription updates without losing the discount details if an update results in an incomplete or failed payment.

To use item-level discounts with pending updates, pass the `discounts` array on subscription items when [updating a subscription](https://docs.stripe.com/api/subscriptions/update.md?api-version=2026-07-29.dahlia#update_subscription-discounts) or [creating](https://docs.stripe.com/api/subscription_items/create.md?api-version=2026-07-29.dahlia#create_subscription_item-discounts) or [updating](https://docs.stripe.com/api/subscription_items/update.md?api-version=2026-07-29.dahlia#update_subscription_item-discounts) a subscription item with `payment_behavior=pending_if_incomplete`. If payment fails, the discount configuration persists on the `pending_update` hash until the payment completes, or expires if no successful payment is made in 23 hours.
